Location and how to get here
The Old Mill Lake is set in tranquil surroundings of the small village of La Tour where you can hear the chimes of the church bells in the village and the occasional tractor whirring by and watch the creamy Charolais cattle staring dozily back at you from the fields.
Wildlife in abundance
The peaceful lakeside position is full of wildlife with swallows ducking and diving over the lake competing with the fish jumping to catch insects. Wild ducks, great crested grebes, herons, kytes, buzzards, kingfishers, woodpeckers, hoopoes and many more!
Chenerailles
5 minutes drive away is the sleepy town of Chenerailles where you will find bars and restaurants, a tabac, presse (newsagent), pharmacy, butcher, baker and small grocery shop to service your needs. A bit further away is Gouzon (15 mins drive) with a few more bars, bank, post office, and a good restaurant the Lion d’Or (Golden Lion). There is a weekly market (every Tuesday), and a new supermarket with a good selection of wines and some English products i.e. Heinz beans, tomato ketchup, marmite, etc. if you are missing some home comforts.
There are several other towns within a short drive worth a visit for their local markets and historic interest. The spa town of Evaux les Bains which has its own Casino, picturesque Chambon sur Voueize, and the tapestry town of Aubusson to name a few. Directions and further information can be provided – we would be happy to mark out a tour of the surrounding area.
Limoges
The larger towns of Limoges, (famous for its porcelain), Gueret, and Montlucon are all within an hours drive accessed by the N145, where you will find a mixture of history and modern facilities; high street shopping or old town architecture and antique markets.
Whichever direction you take from the Old Mill Lake whether walking, cycling or driving you will find beautiful countryside and pretty villages around every corner.
